Le 12 juillet 1997 Oz, une série diffusée pour la première fois ce soir-là aux États-Unis, fit date dans l'histoire de la télévision. Réalisée sur six saisons, elle décryptait le quotidien d'une prison, l'Oswald State Penitentiary, alias Oz, à travers la destinée de ses détenus et du personnel carcéral. En validant ce projet du scénariste Tom Fontana, la chaîne câblée HBO effectua un pari gagnant qui bouleversa le genre. Le constat est simple : il y a un avant et un après-Oz en matière de production de séries.
Avec Oz, HBO fut d'abord la première chaîne à offrir une série dramatique d'une heure sans coupure pub (conformément à son modèle), véritable contrepied aux pratiques des réseaux grand public du hertzien (ABC, NBC, CBS...). Alors que dominent chez ces derniers des sitcoms construites scénaristiquement pour accueillir de la pub (cinq à six séquences ponctuées d'un bouleversement tenant en haleine le spectateur à la pause), Oz développe son récit autour d'actes plus longs, plus denses à visionner d'une traite. Le succès public et surtout critique de la série incitera la chaîne à creuser toujours plus loin le filon d'une narration exigeante au long cours, avec Six Feet Under, The Soprano ou The Wire, contribuant à l'anoblissement de la télévision, encore souvent perçue comme le parent pauvre du cinéma dans la création artistique audiovisuelle.

Friction is growing in the wake of two deaths so Said, Wiseguy leader Schibetta and Gangbanger Jefferson Keane are brought together by Warden Glynn, who tells them to keep their boys quiet or else he'll lock the prison down.

Governor Devlin has reinstated capital punishment in the state--and the first Oz prisoner scheduled to die is Jefferson Keane, who killed a Latino in their skirmish. Before he's executed, Keane donates a kidney to his ailing sister.

A recovered Said ostracizes Huseni Mershah for turning his back on him when he was dying--and orders all the Muslims to cast him out. Impressed by Said's power, Groves decides to kill Glynn in his honor, but ends up stabbing an officer by mistake.

After a visit with his sons, Schillinger realizes he needs to get paroled. He convinces McManus to let him return to Em City with the condition that he leaves Beecher alone. Beecher comes out of the hole hell-bent on making sure Schillinger doesn't get paroled. McManus gets wind of Wittlesey and Ross' contraband operation and orders her to shut it down.
